Half Day & Full Day Trips from Bratislava: The Best Excursions Near Slovakia’s Capital

bct | 7. May 2026

Bratislava Is a Brilliant Base — Don’t Just Stay in the City

Most visitors to Bratislava come as part of a day trip from Vienna or spend just one day in the city, which is a pity. Bratislava’s historical city center is compact, walkable, and can be explored in one day. However, Bratislava is not all of Slovakia. To discover all the beauties of the country, we recommend staying at least 3–4 nights in Bratislava and enriching your stay with some half-day and full-day trips from the city.

Within a single day, you can wake up in the flatlands of Bratislava, visit the north of Slovakia—such as the beautiful Small Fatra National Park—and end the day back in Bratislava.

This guide covers the best half-day and full-day trips from Bratislava—what to expect, how long each takes, how to book them, and what they include.

Half Day Trips from Bratislava

Perfect when you want to stay close, keep it relaxed, and still be back in the city for dinner.

Devin Castle – the Slovak mythical ruins

Just 20-30 minutes drive from Bratislava’s Old town lies one of the most spectacular historical sites in Slovakia – the mythic and majestic Devin Castle. Perched 212 metes above the confluence of the Danube and Morava Rivers, this iconic ancient fortress offers breath-taking views, fascinating and complicated history of Slovakia, and sad and tragic Cold War stories.

A Devín Castle tour from Bratislava is one of the most popular private half-day trips for visitors looking to explore beyond the city center. The excursion is perfect for travelers staying several days in Bratislava, but it is also suitable for cruise passengers.

The first written notice about Devín Castle dates from the 9th century. According to Slovak “old legends,” St. Cyril and Methodius, the patrons of Slovakia, lived here. They Christianized the first Slavic kingdom, Great Moravia. They also invented the first Slavic alphabet, Glagolitic (Hlaholika), which is the predecessor of modern alphabets used in Russia and Bulgaria. They translated the Holy Bible into Old Slavic and also wrote the first Slavic poem, Proglas.

Devín Castle was also a witness to the tragedies of communism. For 40 years, it stood on the frontier between the “Communist Paradise” and the “Western Free World.” Many people died while trying to escape from Communist Czechoslovakia to Austria. This is commemorated by the “Gate of Freedom,” located below the castle. The Gate of Freedom includes the names of all those who died while attempting to flee to Austria.

The Small Carpathian Wine Region is one of the six wine regions of Slovakia and, together with the Slovak part of the Tokaj wine region, also one of the most famous. The wine towns of Svätý Jur, Pezinok, and Modra are all easily reachable, and each offers a distinct character.

The Small Carpathian Wine Route is a blend of some of the most beautiful highlights of the region, including one of the most beautiful castles in Slovakia—Red Stone Castle—the small wine town of Modra, the birthplace of the Slovak national hero Ľudovít Štúr. Continue to Pezinok, the capital of Slovak wine production, with its beautiful historical city center. End in Svätý Jur, a small wine town on the edge of Bratislava, with a wine tasting of organic Slovak wines in a traditional wine cellar. All the wines come from small local producers.

The tour has two options:

  • Regular Small Group Tour
  • Private Tour
  • Organic Wine Tasting Tour

The trip duration: 6,15 hours
Price: from €167 per person

Half Day Trip to Trnava – A “little Rome of Slovakia”

Trnava is an undiscovered gem of Slovakia, located just 50 km from Bratislava. At a time when Bratislava was the capital of the Kingdom of Hungary and the coronation city of Hungarian kings and queens from the Habsburg dynasty, Trnava became the seat of the Catholic Church in the Kingdom of Hungary and the residence of the Archbishop of Esztergom.

Trnava is the 5th–6th largest city in Slovakia, with a population of about 65,000–70,000 inhabitants. The city boasts 13 churches, including one cathedral and one basilica.

The main highlights of Trnava are the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, featuring the largest wooden altar in Europe, and the Gothic Basilica of St. Nicholas from the 13th century, which is very attractive for visitors. The historical city center of Trnava is compact, highly walkable, and easy to explore.

The tour consists of a train journey from Bratislava to Trnava, where you will meet an English-speaking guide at the train station. This is followed by a two-hour walking tour of the historical city center, some free time on your own, and a return trip to Bratislava by train.

The trip duration: 11 hours
Price: from €59 per person
Availability: Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday

Cicmany Tour with Thermal Bath Entrance – The North Slovakia Tour

The region of North-West Slovakia is located just 200 km from the Slovak capital, Bratislava. It is just a 2-hour train journey away.

The full-day trip to Čičmany with a thermal bath entrance consists of a train ride from Bratislava to Žilina. At Žilina train station, a local driver-guide will meet you, and you will continue to the beautiful Rajec Valley, named after the small river Rajčianka.

FAQ – Day Trips fom Bratislava

Can I do a day trip from Bratislava if I’m only staying one night?

Absolutely — even a single overnight stay gives you enough time for a half-day trip. Devín Castle is only 20–30 minutes from the Old Town and takes about 3 hours total, so you can easily be back in the city by early afternoon. If you’re a cruise passenger with limited time, it’s one of the first trips we’d recommend.

What’s the difference between the half-day and full-day trips?

The half-day trips — Devín Castle, Trnava, or the Wine Route — keep you close to Bratislava and have you back in the city by early evening at the latest. The full-day trips head north into the mountains, so you’re looking at around 11–12 hours from departure to return. They’re longer, but the scenery and experience are on a completely different level.

It’s a 10 km trek with about 300 metres of ascent, so a reasonable level of fitness helps — but it’s not a demanding climb. The cable car takes you up to 1,524 metres, and from there the trail is manageable for most people who enjoy a good walk. And yes, there is traditional Slovak plum brandy (slivovica) involved somewhere along the route.

Are the tours available year-round?

Most of them, yes. The wine route, Trnava, Devín, and the Čičmany thermal bath tour run Monday to Sunday throughout the year. The mountain tours in Small Fatra have a slightly reduced schedule in low season — typically Friday to Sunday — so if you’re visiting in winter or early spring, it’s worth checking availability before you plan around them.

How do I get to the starting point — do I need to arrange transport myself?

For the north Slovakia tours, you take the train from Bratislava to Žilina (a very comfortable 2-hour journey), where your driver-guide meets you on the platform. For trips like Trnava, the tour includes the train ride as part of the experience. The Devín Castle excursion is a private trip, so transport is arranged for you from the start. Basically — just show up, we handle the rest.
