Bratislava to Budapest: Best Ways to Travel in 2026

The distance between the Slovak capital, Bratislava, and the Hungarian capital, Budapest, is approximately 200 km. The fastest way to travel between the two cities is by private transfer, taking about 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes, depending on traffic. Rush hours in Bratislava or Budapest can add a 20–30 minute delay. It is also the most comfortable option.
The coach is the cheapest option, with prices starting from €14 one way, but the journey takes over 3 hours. The most popular way to travel between Bratislava and Budapest is by train, especially among American travelers exploring the Central Europe region.

All three options are reliable in 2026.

Did you know that until 1918, the largest Slovak city was not Bratislava, but Budapest—the capital of the Kingdom of Hungary, of which Slovakia was part for more than 1,000 years? And did you know that Bratislava—then known as Pozsony (in Hungarian) or Prešpork (in Slovak)—served as the capital and coronation city of the Kingdom of Hungary for nearly 200 years?

Many travellers visit Vienna, Bratislava, and Budapest, while even more follow the Prague–Vienna–Budapest route, often stopping in Bratislava only for a quick photo—which is a pity. The city is absolutely worth spending at least one full day exploring.

When it comes to traveling between Bratislava and Budapest, there are three realistic options: train, bus, or private transfer. Many travellers also ask whether it is possible to travel between the two cities by river cruise, similar to the popular Twin City Liner route between Vienna and Bratislava. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Although there are numerous river cruises connecting Vienna, Bratislava, and Budapest, there is no fast, regular daily service operating directly between Bratislava and Budapest.

This guide covers all the main ways to travel from one capital to the other— including travel times, prices, booking options, and which choice best suits different types of travellers—based on 2026 schedules and prices.

Optiotion 1: Train from Bratislava to Budapest

The train is probably the most comfortable option for independent travel on this route. The distance between Bratislava and Budapest is approximately 212 km. Trains depart from Bratislava Main Train Station every two hours, from 06:05 to 20:05, and arrive at Budapest Nyugati Railway Station.

Ticket prices start from €22 per person for a 2nd class ticket with seat reservation, or €32 for a 1st class ticket with seat reservation.

Bratislava City Tours offers a private, door-to-door transfer from Bratislava Main Train Station to your accommodation in the city, with one-way prices starting from €11.

In Budapest, we recommend booking a private transfer from Budapest Nyugati Railway Station with CITYRAMA Budapest.

Tickets can be purchased on the Slovak Railways website, which is available in Slovak and English. Prices are listed in euros.

💡 Local tip: Book at least a week in advance to secure the best prices. Last-minute train tickets on this route can be surprisingly expensive compared to the bus.

Option 2: Bus from Bratislava to Budapest

The cheapest way to travel between Bratislava and Budapest is by coach, although it is the least comfortable way of transfer. There are two bus companies offering their services.

  • FlixBus: 9–10 times per day, direct transfer
  • RegioJet: 2 times per day, direct transfer

Both bus companies depart from Bratislava bus station (Autobusová stanica Mlynské Nivy, the new Nivy station, Nivy Shopping Mall), and FlixBus goes either to Budapest Népliget or to Budapest Kelenföld.

Journey time is about 3 hours, depending on traffic and the specific service. The route: Bratislava bus station (Autobusová stanica Mlynské Nivy, the new Nivy station) to Budapest Népliget or Kelenföld bus stations. Journey time is approximately 2 hours 20 minutes to 3 hours, depending on traffic and the specific service.

Prices: from €10 (RegioJet) up to €17 (FlixBus). Both companies have dynamic prices, so we advise you to book in advance.

What to watch out for: Budapest traffic can add 30–45 minutes to the journey, particularly on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings. The Népliget bus station in Budapest is functional but not especially central — you’ll need a metro or taxi onwards to your hotel.

Option 3: Private Transfer from Bratislava to Budapest by Bratislava City Tours or vice versa

A private transfer from Bratislava to Budapest, or vice versa, is the most flexible and most comfortable option, although also the most expensive. However, for a group of friends or a family, the price per person is more or less the same as a 1st class train ticket with seat reservation.

When booking a transfer, you also save on the cost of getting to the bus or train station in Bratislava as well as in Vienna. We at Bratislava City Tours offer a door-to-door service, from your address in Bratislava to your address in Budapest, whether you stay at a hotel or an Airbnb.

Who it suits best:

Practical tips for 2026

Currency: Slovakia has used the euro (EUR) since 2009. Hungary uses its own currency, the Hungarian forint (HUF). Due to high inflation in Hungary, the exchange rate is approximately €1 = 365.40 HUF (2026). In Budapest, you can pay for almost everything by card. In Slovakia, by law, every shop must accept cashless payment for amounts over €1.

Passport: As you are traveling from one country to another, although within the European Union, you are required to carry a valid passport (non-EU citizens) or a valid ID (EU citizens). Traveling without a valid passport or ID is a crime. A copy of your passport is not sufficient.

Combining with Vienna: Many travellers do a three-capital route: Vienna → Bratislava → Budapest (or the reverse). If that is your plan, a private transfer can be arranged for the full Vienna–Bratislava–Budapest corridor, which makes the logistics significantly simpler.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions Bratislava to Budapest

How long does it take to get from Bratislava to Budapest?

It depends on how you travel. By private transfer, you’re looking at about 2 hours 15 minutes door to door — though Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings can add another 20–30 minutes if Budapest traffic is bad. By train it’s a similar story: trains run roughly every two hours from Bratislava Main Station and arrive at Budapest Nyugati in about 2.5 hours. The bus takes a little longer — usually around 3 hours — but it’s the cheapest option if you’re not in a rush.

Is it worth taking the train or should I just book a private transfer?

Honestly, it depends on your group size and what matters most to you. If you’re travelling solo or as a couple and you’re comfortable with stations and schedules, the train is a great experience — comfortable, scenic, and you arrive right in the centre of Budapest. But if there are three or more of you, or you’ve got kids and luggage, a private transfer starts to make a lot more sense. The price per person ends up being similar to a first class train ticket — and your driver picks you up from your front door, no stations involved.

Do I need a passport to travel from Bratislava to Budapest?

Yes — even though both Slovakia and Hungary are in the European Union, you are crossing an international border, so you do need to carry valid travel documents. EU citizens need a valid national ID card. Non-EU citizens need a valid passport. A photo on your phone or a photocopy won’t cut it, so just make sure you have the real thing with you before you set off.

Can I do a stop in Bratislava if I’m travelling between Vienna and Budapest?

Absolutely — and we’d really recommend it. A lot of travellers rush through Bratislava on the Vienna–Budapest route without stopping, which is a shame because the city genuinely deserves at least a full day. We actually offer a special transfer that combines the journey with a 2-hour guided walking tour of Bratislava’s Old Town in the middle — so you get the transfer handled and a proper taste of the city at the same time. Traditional Slovak lunch can be added too if you’re hungry. Prices start from €122 per person and it’s one of the things our guests most often tell us they wish they’d known about sooner.
