The Roland fountain which is originally named the Maximilian fountain is the oldest Bratislava’s fountain dated back to 1527. Fountain it is located in the Bratislava’s Main Square. The fountain photo is a must for every traveller who visit Slovakian capital.

The fountain was built as a memory of first coronation in Bratislava, which took place on 08.09.1563 of Hungarian King Maximilian II., from ruling mighty Habsburg dynasty. It construction was ordered by Maximilan II. himself, to provide a public water supply and to prevent the fires in Bratislava’s city center. The fountain is topped by a statue of Maximilian portrayed as a knight in full armour sculptured by master A. Lutringer. The fountain has been many times rebuilt, and it is probably far from its original look.

He could play a love song with his sword. He used to play it at Bratislava Main Square to his lover Olifante, and the song became popular among the local people. But suddenly knight Roland came back home to Breton (today part of France). The local people started complaining to a mayor, that their kids can not get asleep, because they did not hear anymore the love song of knight Roland. The mayor decided that instead of the love song the kinds would hear the murmur of the water from fountain.
