Bratislava Castle – A must see on a walking tour or Vienna Day Trip

Bratislava Castle – The Icon Watching Over the Danube

Bratislava Castle and the city seem like an inseparable unit. In the past, however, they were two independent areas, whilst the Castle Hill – the area beneath the Castle had its own urban character. The Castle Hill and the Castle eventually formed the fourth city district named Theresienstadt, a tribute to Maria Theresa. The castle is closely connected with Maria Theresa and above all with her sweetheart daughter Maria Christina. Bratislava Castle is the main highlight of Bratislava, a must see during any walking tour or Vienna day trip to Bratislava.

Where is Bratislava Castle and why is it so important?

Bratislava Castle is located above the historical city center of Bratislava and the Danube waterfront. The royal palace stood on the Castle hill for centuries, and it is the key symbol of Bratislava as well as of Slovakia. The portrait of the castle is on the Slovak series of the EURO coins in the value of 10,20 and 50 Eurocents.

From the castle courtyard, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of Bratislava’s Old Town with St. Martin’s Cathedral, the Petržalka district, and the Danube area. On clear days, the view stretches as far as Hungary, and you can even spot the windmills across the border in Austria.

A Short History of Bratislava Castle

Castle hill was settled as early as in prehistoric times. Later it became home to Celts who used it as acropolis of the oppidum. After the Celts the Slavs arrived. They added a basilica to the fort and the site became a major centre within the Great Moravian Empire.

The first written notice about the castle is from 907 AD when, on 09 July, the battle between the Bavarians and Old Magyars was waged nearby. Since the record doesn’t mention Great Moravian army, the Battle by Bratislava is considered to mark the decline of the Empire.

The castle in 16th century was fortified in response to the Turkish presence in Central Europe. The Royal palace was turned into an opulent residence of Emperor Ferdinand I Habsburg.

Golden era of Bratislava Castle

The reallocation of the capital of Hungarian Kingdom from Budapest to Bratislava means a golden era of Bratislava and its castle. The golden era of the castle is closely connected to Empress Maria Theresa. Bratislava Castle was once home to her favorite daughter, Maria Christina. As the only one of Maria Theresa’s sixteen children, she was allowed to marry for love. Her husband was Albert the Duke of Teschen, the viceroy and the founder of Albertina Museum. He started his collection at Bratislava Castle.

On 28 May 1811 the castle was burned down and turned into a ruin. The site kept deteriorating for more than 140 years. Its general reconstruction began in 1953 and lasted until 1968. In 2008 the second major reconstruction began that gave the Castle the appearance it had in the era of Maria Theresa.

The reconstruction of the entire grounds was completed in 2016. The Castle is now the representative venue of Slovak Parliament. It is also used by the Slovak National Museum for permanent expositions and current exhibitions of the History Museum.

The secret corridor to Vienna

There is hardly any castle that wouldn’t be linked to some legend about secret underground corridors. The Bratislava Castle is no exception. When however, the secret corridor to Vienna was not found, a new legend emerged about how the corridor had disappeared.

The report about the accession of Maria Theresa to the throne was received with overall delight, though there were also those who weren’t so pleased. Some Hungarian aristocrats could not imagine to be ruled by a woman. They decided to plot a conspiracy against her. Nonetheless, she found out about it and invited the conspirations for a dinner at the Bratislava Castle. When the conspirators drunk more than they could bear, she had them taken to their chambers. Here, the legend has it, witches turned them to stones and were dropped in the Castle well. The underground spaces got thus obstructed by the rocks what made the corridor disappear forever. Yet one of the corridors does actually lead from the Castle. It ends in an area above the street Zizkova. It was a pipeline of the Kempelen water supply network leading from the Danube to the Castle.
