To Devin Castle from Bratislava’s city center you can get either by public transport by the line 29 with bus stop at Bratislava Most SNP. Also in summer you can get to the Devin area by boat. Devin is today the suburb of Bratislava, located on frontier of three countries Slovakia, Austria & Czech Republic. The Devin Castle boast by a strategic location on confluence of two mighty rives, the River Danube & River Moravia. During Roman Times Devin Castle was a part of Roman Frontier – Limes Romanus. At 09th century the king of Great Moravian Empire, Rastislav built here the massive fortress. Therefore the Devin Castle plays an important role in history of Slovakia as an cradle of Slovakian nationality. Devin Castle is also connected with St. Cyril & Method, the patrons of Slovakia, who according to the legends should lived and worked here.

In 13th century after the Tartar – Mongol wars, the King Belo IV decided to built a castle here. In 1809 the castle was destroyed by Napoleon army. Now the castle are just the very well preserved ruins. Devin Castle is in Slovakia also well known thanks to a trip of a band of Slovakian group of Ludovit Stur, who fought for autonomy of Slovakia within Austro – Hungarian Empire.

Devin Castle as a Part of Iron Curtain

During time of communism 1949 – 1989, Devin area and the confluence of river Danube and river Moravia was a frontier of iron curtain, where unfortunately died a so many refugees who wanted escape from “socialist/ communist paradise” to west. The remark of the casualties is a Gate of Freedom located under the castle.
