Discover the Hungarian Royal Chamber Palace in Bratislava

bct | 18. July 2024

Nestled on Michalska Street right in the heart of Bratislava, the Hungarian Royal Chamber Palace stands a magnificent relic of the city’s golden era, when Bratislava was a capital city of Hungarian Kingdom. Once the epicenter of political power, this palace is a symbol of imperial past of Slovakian Capital.

A Glimpse into the Past

The Hungarian Royal Chamber Palace in Bratislava is a site of immense historical importance. It was built according to the design of Italian master G.B Martinelli, on the site of older town houses in 1753 – 1756. In 1772 the building was extended and another house from Venturska street was added to it. The renovations were directed by Bratislava builder K.F. Romisch according to the project of F.A. Hilldebrand. During the time when Bratislavava (formerly Pressburg) was the capital city of the Hungarian Kingdom, the Hungarian Diet sat here from 1802 to 1848.

The palace of Hungarian Royal Chamber also witnessed the important event for a Slovakian history. The speech of Ludovit Stur, Slovakian national hero, who fought for autonomy of Slovakia within Hungarian Kingdom on 21.12. 1847. On this date he demanded two conditions:

  1. Abolition of servitude
  2. Autonomy for Slovakia within Hungarian Kingdom

In mid of 20th century the palace underwent the reconstruction and now it serves as university library of Comenius university. The palace now is the finest example of Baroque Palace architecture in Bratislava.
