Devin Castle – Historic Landmark

Visit Devín Castle, dating back to the 9th century AD and the time of the Great Moravian Empire. Learn about the patrons of Slovakia, Saints Cyril and Methodius, who brought Christianity to Great Moravia. They created the first Slavic alphabet, Glagolitic, the predecessor of modern Cyrillic alphabets used in Russian, Serbian, and Bulgarian. They also translated the Holy Bible into Old Church Slavonic and wrote the first Slavic poem, Proglas.

The castle area also played an important role during the communist era, as it marked part of the Iron Curtain border. Many people lost their lives while attempting to escape across the Danube from the “communist paradise” to the “free world” — either drowning in the river or being shot while trying to cross the border.
