Bratislava Old Market Hall
Bratislava Old Market Hall is one of the most “vivid” places of Bratislava, nowadays the favourite place of local people thanks to its unique genius loci.
History of Bratislava Old Market Hall
The original 15th century bastion was part of the city fortification. It was replaced in 1910 by the eclectic building of the market hall. The construction that resembles railway station used to be for a long time the only covert market in Bratislava. The market hall served to it’s main purpose till 60th years of last century. Afterwards the hall was used for many purposes such as warehouse, or TV studios for Czechoslovakian television. In 1992 the major reconstruction of the Market Hall took place.
Since 2013 a civic association The Alliance Old Market Hall (Aliancia Stará Tržnica) takes care of this building owned by the City of Bratislava. Since then, the Alliance revitalizes this before abandoned market hall with the aim to turn it into a marketplace as well as a cultural event venue.
The Old Market Hall today is used for cultural events, food markets and has a range of unique shops and restaurants. A fountain which is over 400 year old with a lion holding the city coat of arms in front of the market hall. The food markets take place every Saturday from 09:00 am until 15:00 pm.
